Under His Feet

Today is Ascension Day. Did you realize that? Forty days after he rose from the dead, Jesus ascended into heaven. He rose up into the air until a cloud hid him from his disciples’ sight. That doesn’t sound like a good thing. Why would we want to celebrate the fact that Jesus left the earth?

Because the Bible explains what Jesus’ ascension means for you and me. God “seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church” (Ephesians 1:21-22).

Jesus didn’t abandon us. He didn’t ascend into heaven because he was done with us. He returned to heaven to rule over all things for us. Here’s God’s promise: God has placed all things under Jesus’ feet.

Realize what that means for you: The same Savior who loved you so much that he died for you has control over all things. All things are under Jesus’ feet. That sickness that won’t go away? Under his feet! That worry about the future that plagues your heart? Under his feet! That pregnancy filled with so many unknowns? Under his feet! Even our greatest enemies like sin, death, and the devil? Under his feet!

Today on Ascension Day, rejoice that Jesus Christ your Savior reigns as king over heaven and earth, and every single detail of your life is under his feet. Every single second is under his control. Whatever fear or anxiety or guilt plagues your heart today, take a deep breath: It’s under Jesus’ feet!

Happy Ascension Day!
