When Everything Seems Meaningless

“Meaningless! Meaningless! Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). Isn’t that the truth? Everything is meaningless! If it sounds like I’m having a bad day, those are actually words straight from the Bible. The book of Ecclesiastes tells it like it is: “What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun? Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises. The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again. All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing” (Ecclesiastes 1:3-8). What an accurate description of life without God! Meaningless. Everything is meaningless!

Do you know who gives meaning to the meaninglessness around us? Jesus. Oh, how we need Jesus! We need the forgiveness that comes from Jesus’ cross. We need the hope that comes from Jesus’ promises. We need the meaning that comes from Jesus’ purpose for every single one of our lives. If life in this world seems meaningless, it is! Until you see the hope and the future and the meaning found in Jesus.
