Yesterday, our church celebrated Ascension Day. Forty days after rising from the dead, Jesus ascended into heaven. Doesn’t that sound like a foolish thing to celebrate? Why would we be happy that Jesus left? Isn’t that the last thing we need? You’d think Ascension Day would be a sad day: Jesus is gone!
It would be, except Jesus gave his disciples—and us—this promise: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). When Jesus lived on earth, he was only in one place at a time. Now as our ascended Savior, he’s everywhere with every believer all time. Isn’t that great news? He’s with you always! When you sit at home alone—with you always! When you go to the store—with you always! When you lie in a hospital bed—with you always! When you struggle at work—with you always!
Far from leaving us, Jesus is reigning over all things for us from his heavenly throne. I know there are days when it seems like Jesus is gone. He’s not! Remember his promise: “Surely I am with you always!”
