Sometimes it surprises us how sinful we are. Does that happen to you? It did to Paul in the Bible. “I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:19). Sound familiar? Are there days when you say, “How can I be so sinful? How could I do that again? Why can’t I stop doing that?” As he thought about it, Paul thought of a word to describe himself: Wretched. “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (Romans 7:24). It’s surprising how wretched we are.
But Paul realized something else. There is Someone who could rescue him. There is Someone who saves even wretched people. Jesus! “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:25). Like the song says, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see.” We have a Savior who died to save sinners. When you’re surprised by your sin, look to Jesus and be even more surprised by his amazing grace.
