Your Identity

People are talking a lot about identity these days. What’s your identity? We hear about “gender identity”—whether people identity as a male or female. Many people’s identity seems tied to sexuality—gay or straight or something else. It’s easy to have your identity get wrapped up in your work. “I’m a pastor.” “Farmer.” “Mother.” “Truck driver.” Here’s a warning for you: If your identity is wrapped up in your gender or sexuality, if your identity depends on your job or position, then you will never find true contentment and peace in your life. Do you know why? Because none of that is who you really are!

What’s your identity? “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26-28). If you have faith in Christ Jesus, here’s your identity: You are a redeemed child of God! Your identity doesn’t depend on your sin. It doesn’t depend on your sexuality. It doesn’t depend on what you do. It depends on Jesus Christ your Savior, who has forgiven your sin and made you God’s child. The next time someone asks you what or who you are, tell them God’s wonderful truth: “I’m a redeemed child of God!” That’s your real identity.
