Your Sword

I sense confusion among Christians about the best way to go on the offensive against all the anti-Christian sentiments we hear around us. Unfortunately, there’s no confusion in my sinful nature. My sinful nature knows just what to do to be offensive. What feels right is to insult and mock. “Can’t all the idiots see how wrong they are?” What feels right is to force or coerce. “How can we make people do what we want them to do?” What feels right is to trust in getting just the right leader or right laws in place. “If we just had _____, then our country would be more Christian!” And the devil laughs. He loves it when we try to fight using his weapons: Lies, attacks, insults, manipulation…

Christians have one weapon and one weapon alone. Listen carefully: “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). We need this reminder all the time! Our battle as Christians is a spiritual battle, and spiritual battles can only be fought using God’s strength found in God’s Word. Christianity doesn’t spread through coercion or force. Christianity doesn’t spread through more laws or different leaders. Christianity spreads through the proclamation of God’s Word. Christianity spreads when God’s law convicts people’s hearts of sin and God’s gospel amazes them with his great love and forgiveness for us in Jesus. You want to fight for Jesus? You want to spread God’s kingdom? Then pull out the sword of the Spirit and share the Word of God!
